Noel shares his perspective on innovation and creativity, along with advice for aspiring engineers, aiming to merge creativity with technical skills.
- You’re passionate about blending technical precision with creativity, especially through your music production work. How do your experiences as an artist influence your engineering mindset, and vice versa?
Being an artist allows me to approach technical challenges with a creative mindset. When I encounter complex research problems, I also try to look for solutions beyond conventional ways, a skill I acquired being a creative person. At the same time, my engineering background provides a structured approach, allowing me to translate creative ideas into practical implementations.
- Which part of your work excites you the most?
The most exciting aspect of my work is the ongoing learning process and the curiosity that drives problem-solving. Audio engineering is a field where technology and creativity constantly meet, so there is always something new to explore. Whether it’s spatial audio, signal processing, or music production techniques, the process of problem-solving and curiosity is what makes my work exciting.
- What’s one piece of advice you’d give to aspiring audio engineers who want to bridge the gap between technical skills and creative thinking?
Start by mastering the fundamentals of audio engineering. Understanding how sound works at a technical level gives you the tools to experiment with and apply practical solutions. With a solid technical foundation, you can experiment confidently with signals. Innovation comes when technical mastery blends with creative imagination, so stay curious and keep exploring.
- When you encounter a technical or creative block, what’s your go-to strategy for finding fresh ideas or solutions?
Collaboration is very important when it comes to overcoming technical blocks. Discussing challenges and exchanging ideas with colleagues often leads to brainstorming sessions, new insights, and fresh perspectives. I also find that stepping away for a short break, listening to music, or simply spending time in nature helps clear my mind and rest my focus.
