AES International Conference on Audio for Virtual and Augmented Reality (AVAR) 2022

2022-08-24

Brandenburg Labs was honored to participate as a GOLD Sponsor in the AES International Conference on Audio for Virtual and Augmented Reality (AVAR) 2022.

The conference was held at the DigiPen Institute of Technology in Redmond, WA, USA., from August 15-17, 2022.

Our team had a great time presenting our immersive audio demo, a fully virtual and dynamic doppelganger of a real pair of stereo speakers, auralized over headphones, which could be switched live to their real counterparts. Let us take you down memory lane summarizing our incredible time at the AVAR 2022 conference.

Our CEO Karlheinz Brandenburg’s keynote: “Making the dream of plausible binaural audio come true: which cues are most important?” was immensely inspiring and facilitated a lively discussion with the audience. Karlheinz highlighted that with state-of-the-art research in immersive and spatial audio, immersing oneself in a virtual environment using just headphones can become a reality soon.

He then discussed the current challenges of binaural audio, comparing how recent research can help improve it as well as future possibilities for AR and VR. Karlheinz also highlighted what has been done to improve the spatial sound over headphones, comparing the old and new approaches. Thanks to the organizing committee of AVAR 2022, the keynote was live streamed on YouTube, where numerous interested individuals could attend the discussion remotely.

Furthermore, our team welcomed guests to our immersive audio demo who signed up for the best sound adventure. Accordingly, the feedback we collected from the participants was delightful; where they complimented our demo as impressive, incredibly precise, and even mind-blowing. The demo proved once again that we are able to immerse the listener in a real listening environment with lifelike augmented audio content. Seeing the excitement and overwhelmingly great deal of interest in the demo proved that there is a great demand for spatial audio solutions that can bridge the gap between virtual audio content and real life.

Additionally, our team had the pleasure of listening to other companies’ exciting demos, which displayed various advancements in the field of audio technology. Moreover, it was once again a delight being part of interesting audio technology discussions and workshops while diving deep into diverse research areas and learning how other companies and universities are approaching state-of-the-art was valuable.

Finally, we would like to thank the AVAR 2022 organizing committee for hosting such a fantastic event bringing the great minds behind breakthrough audio technology together. Our team utilized the opportunity to network with speakers and participants while exchanging invaluable experiences and trends in the audio technology niche. We are beyond grateful for the opportunities this event created for us to collaborate with potential partners and network internationally to broaden our business horizons.
